CompTIA A+ is the foundation of your IT career and is the industry-recognized credential for technical support and IT operational roles. CompTIA has launched the new CompTIA A+ certification with new nomenclature, exam objectives, and a focus on the expansion of baseline security topics and a different approach to define competency in operational procedures.

CompTIA A+ Core Series Exam Objectives

To earn CompTIA A+ Core Series certification, candidates are required to pass two exams: Core 1 (220-1001) and Core 2 (220-1002). As per CompTIA, Core 1 and Core 2 together covers the following new content:

  • Demonstrate baseline security skills for IT support professionals
  • Configure device operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, Android and iOS and administer client-based as well as cloud-based (SaaS) software
  • Troubleshoot and problem solve core service and support challenges while applying best practices for documentation, change management, and scripting
  • Support basic IT infrastructure and networking
  • Configure and support PC, mobile and IoT device hardware
  • Implement basic data backup and recovery methods and apply data storage and management best practices

CompTIA has enhanced the A+ certification scheme to align with the latest trends in the IT workforce. The Core Series is designed to cover a wide variety of skills and specializations like cloud, cybersecurity, network administration, and more by focusing on complex problem-solving skills that IT professionals may encounter in the field. The new A+ offers a wider approach to explore career opportunities. Here are the exam objectives percentage for CompTIA Core 1 (220-1001):

  • Mobile Devices: 14%
  • Networking: 20%
  • Hardware: 27%
  • Virtualization and Cloud Computing: 12%
  • Hardware and Network Troubleshooting: 27%

The objectives percentage for CompTIA Core 2 (220-1002) are:

  • Operating Systems: 27%
  • Security: 24%
  • Software Troubleshooting: 26%
  • Operational Procedures: 23%
