The 70-649 exam is an upgrade exam that is a composite of three stand-alone exams: Exams 70-640, 70-642, and 70-643. The certification is proof of a person's competence across a spectrum of skills related to the core technology features and functionality of Windows Server 2008 based on the existing knowledge set of a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) on Windows Server 2003.

If you already hold MCSE on Windows Server 2003, you can take 70-649 exam to upgrade your certification. This exam fulfills the the requirements for the following certifications:

What is the exam's retake policy?

In the event that you fail your first attempt at passing the 70-649 exam , Microsoft's retake policy is:

  • You may not take a given exam any more than five times per year (12 months). This 12-month period would start the day of the fifth unsuccessful exam retake. You would then be eligible to retake the exam 12 months from that date. In order to take a given exam more than five times per year, you must submit a request and obtain prior permission from Microsoft.
  • You must wait at least a 24-hour period before retaking the exam.
  • If you need a third or subsequent attempt to pass the certification, you shall be required to wait for a period of at least a 14-day before retaking the exam.
  • If you have already passed the exam, it cannot be taken again without prior consent from Microsoft.
What is the validity of the certification? Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist has no expiration. The certification holder is certified for life unless the vendor changes its policy. Click here for more information.
