Many of the questions in this Microsoft Office Specialist exam require you to complete a series of tasks to create or modify a typical business document. For example, you might be instructed as follows:

Modify the Store Inventory worksheet by completing the following tasks:

  • Enter a formula in cell F26 to average the values in cell range F3:F25 to calculate average purchase price.
  • Use AutoFilter to display the records for items with a retail price greater than or equal to 100.00.

This exam uses the actual Microsoft Excel 2003 program. All menu items, keyboard shortcuts and right-click options will be available to complete the tasks. The help menu, including use of the Office Assistant, is not available in any of the exams.

One to three points are possible per question, depending on the number of specified tasks. At the conclusion of an exam your final score is derived by converting the task score to a 1000-point scale.

While some questions involve more tasks than others, each question is scored on a total-score basis (i.e., number correct) rather than on a pass/fail basis. For example, a 20-question exam may have 34 possible points; one point for each task.

  1. I am looking to have my sons take the MOS Excel certication tests in January. They already know Excel and I found a testing center for $100. What I need is some written or on-line Preparation Booklet, or at a minimum a listing of what is typically on the test. I do not need basic Excel instruction materials.

    Can someone assist me … I’m willing to order a book, etc.
