The latest version of the exam for EC-Council’s well-known Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) credential is going up. CEHv7 features an exam registration price of $500, double the $250 cost of the CEHv6 exam. Independent candidates (i.e. anyone who doesn’t purchase training from an EC-Council authorized training partner) must pay an additional $100 nonrefundable fee to request permission to take the exam.

According to the EC-Council, the CEHv6 exam will expire on September 30, 2011, leaving CEHv7 the only option. The self-study fee is already in effect, but you can potentially save $250 if you pass the CEHv6 exam before it is retired at the end of September. Although no explanation is provided for the drastic price increase, the EC-Council website does state several times “Any inconvenience is greatly regretted.”
