WLC (Wireless LAN Controller) is a device used to configure the wireless networks and provide configurations to lightweight access point. It also provides security policies, intrusion prevention, RF management, quality of service (QoS), and mobility functions in a wireless network. WLC works with access points and Cisco wireless control system (WCS) to support wireless applications. It is easy to integrate a controller into an existing enterprise network. The communication between lightweight access point and the controller occurs over Layer 2 or Layer 3 infrastructure using LWAPP (Lightweight Access Point Protocol). Cisco wireless LAN controller is defined in 802.11 a/b/g and the IEEE 802.11n draft 2.0 standards.
