What is the WHENEVER clause used for?

Rating:

The WHENEVER clause is used to put restrictive conditions in AUDIT statements. If the WHENEVER clause is not specified in AUDIT statements, then all actions - successful and unsuccessful - are audited. The WHENEVER clause is always used with the AUDIT statement.

Some examples given below makes the above-mentioned explanation clear.

Suppose a user, named Vendata, wants to limit her auditing work to only unsuccessful executions then she will use the WHENEVER clause as given below:

  • AUDIT table BY Vendata WHENEVER NOT SUCCESSFUL;
And in contrast to the above, if she wants to limit her auditing work to only successful executions then she will use the WHENEVER clause as given below:
  • AUDIT table BY Vendata WHENEVER SUCCESSFUL;
And instead of both these AUDIT statements, if she doesn't include the WHENEVER clause in the AUDIT statement, then both the unsuccessful and successful executions will be included in the audit records.
