What is the su command?

The switch user (su) command is used to switch from one user login to another.

Syntax:

su [option] – <user>

Several options are used with the su command. Following is a list of some important options:

Options description
-c Passes a single command to the shell.
-m Does not reset environment variables.
-s Runs SHELL.
–help Displays help for the command.

Note: If a user name is not specified, the command switches the login to the root user.
