What is the Mailbox server role?

The Mailbox server role is used to host mailboxes and public folders. All message data is stored on the Mailbox server. Therefore, it needs to be provisioned with more disk space than any other roles in an Exchange organization. Mailbox servers also provide scheduling services for Microsoft Office Outlook users.
