What is the EXTRACT function?

The EXTRACT function is used to extract and return specified values from a datetime or interval value expression. It is available on 9i, 10g, and 11g platforms. The syntax of the function is as follows:

EXTRACT ({YEAR|MONTH|DAY|HOUR|MINUTE|SECOND}|{TIMEZONE_HOUR|TIMEZONE_MINUTE}|{TIMEZONE_REGION|TIMEZONE_ABBR} FROM {date_value|interval_value})

The TIMEZONE_REGION or TIMEZONE_ABBR clause returns a string value that contains the appropriate time zone name or abbreviation.

Note: Only one specified value can be retrieved using the EXTRACT function.
