What is the enumeration method compareTo()?

February 24th, 2007 by uCertify Leave a reply »

The compareTo() method is used to compare the ordinal value of two enumeration constants. The general form of the compareTo() method is as follows:

final int compareTo(enum-type e)

Here, the enum-type is the type of the enumeration, and e is the constant that is used to compare the invoking constant. It is necessary that the invoking constant and e must be of the same enumeration. If the invoking constant’s ordinal value is less than that of e, the compareTo() method returns a negative value. If both are the same, zero is returned. If the invoking constant’s ordinal value is greater than that of e, a positive value is returned.
