What is LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT?

LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT is a parameter used with the ALTER DATABASE command that specifies the format in which the filename of the archived redo log is written.
The properties of this parameter are as follows:

  • Paramater type - String
  • Default value - Operating system dependent
  • Parameter class - Static
  • Range of values - The range is that required to produce a valid filename
  • Syntax - LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT = filename
The parameter LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT is valid only if redo log is used in ARCHIVELOG mode.

An example of this parameter is as follows:
LOG_ARCHIVE_FORMAT = "LOG %s_%t_%r.Arc"

If the letters in the variable are in uppercase such as %S, %T, %R, and %D then it results in the value of the variable to be of fixed length and fills zeros to the left or is padded with zeros to the left.
