What is functional specification?

Rating:

Functional specification defines what, how, and when a project will be built. It is a virtual repository of project and design-based activities created during the planning phase of the application development life cycle. It records the major decisions and agreements made on the basis of the project's functionalities. It also records various interfaces, design goals, and priorities of the project. The key benefit to write a functional specification is to streamline the development process.

The major objectives of a functional specification are as follows:

  • To identify the business and user requirements.

  • To understand each part of the business problem and then to document it.

  • To modularize the project logically.

  • To plan, schedule, and build the project.

  • To serve as an agreement between the project team and the user.
