Disk quota is a feature of Windows XP Professional that allows administrators to track and control the use of the total hard disk space. It is available on a volume formatted with the NTFS file system. Disk quota applies to an entire volume. It cannot be configured on a folder-by-folder basis or be assigned to a group. Administrators can manage disk quota only on a user-by-user basis. When the disk quota is enabled on a volume that contains multiple shared folders, the total amount of disk space that can be consumed by the users in all the shared folders on the volume cannot exceed their quota limit for that volume. A user cannot increase his quota limit by compressing files on that volume. If a user reaches the quota limit, he will have to delete some files, transfer ownership of some of his files to another user, or ask an administrator to increase the quota limit assigned to him.
