Data collector sets is a tool in Windows Vista that allows an administrator to view a computer's configuration, an existing problem, and any modifications that may have brought this problem in the computer.
It is used to collect data in a log file so that it can be viewed at the time of any error. It collects the following types of data:

  • Performance counters and alerts
  • Event trace data, displaying detailed debugging information
  • System configuration information
Windows Vista includes four built in data collector sets that are located at Reliability and Performance\Data Collector Sets\System subfolder. These are as follows:
  • System Performance
  • System Diagnostic
  • LAN Diagnostic
  • Wireless Diagnostic
