A POP3 virtual server is a virtual server installed with the installation of Exchange Server 2003 on a server. It allows POP3 clients to retrieve their e-mails from the server. By default, any POP3 client that supports basic authentication can access a POP3 virtual server. However, a mailbox-enabled user must be created in Active Directory for a POP3 client before he can connect to the POP3 server. POP3 servers can be configured to grant or deny access to specific computers, group of computers, or domains. Since Exchange Server 2003 uses its own POP3 service to support POP3 clients, the Windows Server 2003 POP3 service must be uninstalled from the server before installing Exchange Server 2003.
