A dual core processor is a CPU containing two separate cores in the same die. Each core has it own cache. It is the equivalent of two microprocessors in one die. In a dual core microprocessor, each core handles incoming data simultaneously to improve efficiency. When one core of CPU is executing its code the other can be accessing the system bus or executing its own code. In order to utilize the dual core processor, the operating system should be able to recognize multi-threading and the software must have simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT) written into its code.
