What is a clipping mask?

A clipping mask enables a user to clip a layer by the contents of the layer beneath it. It is created when a user holds down the Alt key (Windows) or the Option key (Mac OS), takes the pointer over the line separating both the layers in the Layers palette, and clicks as the pointer changes into two overlapping circles
