What are the steps involved in performance tuning?

Rating:

Following are the steps involved in performance tuning:

  1. Defining the problem: This involves analyzing the problem for the slowdown, and charting out a tuning goal accordingly.
  2. Examining the host system and Oracle statistics for any evidence: This involves analyzing the host system (the operating system, underlying hardware, network statistics) and Oracle statistics.
  3. Considering the list of common performance errors: This involves comparing the probable causes of error as analyzed from step 2 with the common performance problems to figure out if the probable error lies in the latter domain.
  4. Building a conceptual model: This involves using the statistics gathered from step 2, building a conceptual picture of exactly what is going on in the system.
  5. Proposing, implementing, and measuring change in application performance: This involves figuring out the possible changes that could be brought to enhance the performance and trying to implement them.
  6. Determining whether or not the tuning goal has been met: This involves determining whether or not the tuning goal set out in step 1 has been achieved. If the goal has not been met then repeat steps 5 and 6 until the tuning goal is met.
