What are the .rhosts and .shosts files?

May 31st, 2006 by uCertify Leave a reply »

The $HOME/.rhosts and $HOME/.shosts files are used by the rlogin and rsh commands. These files contain information about the remote computers on which a user wants to connect. For example, if a user has created a $HOME/.shosts file that contains a line of the form: zenxa.domain1 John zenxb.domain2 Maria, then John can log on to zenxb from zenxa using Maria’s account without the need for Maria’s password.
