What are the operational modes for an Exchange Server 2003 organization?
Rating:
An Exchange Server 2003 organization works in two modes: native mode and mixed mode. Native mode offers full Exchange functionality, whereas mixed mode provides limited Exchange functionality. When the first Exchange Server 2003 server is installed, it operates in mixed mode by default. Although the Exchange Server 2003 running in mixed mode offers less functionality than the native mode, it provides the following features:
- Interoperability between servers running Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 5.5.
- Routing between Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 5.5.
- Using the existing Exchange Server 5.5 connectors and gateways to connect to foreign e-mail systems.
- Managing both the Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange Server 2003 objects from Active Directory.
- Options to install the Exchange Server 5.5 servers in future.
