What are the hardware requirements for running Aero?

In order to run Aero, the graphic adaptor card must meet the following criteria:

  • DirectX 9 capability: Only systems having DirectX 9 capable graphic adaptor cards can run Aero.

  • A Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver: WDDM drivers are drivers specifically written for Windows Vista. If a WDDM driver is unavailable, the Aero interface will not work and the basic interface will be applied by the operating system.

  • Hardware Pixel Shader 2.0: Hardware Pixel Shader 2.0 is a set of mathematical routines. It is used to generate visual effects on a per-pixel basis.

  • 32 bits per pixel: The graphics adapter must support 32-bit color.

  • 128MB graphics memory: A minimum of 128MB graphics memory is required for running Aero.
To run Aero, it is required to set Aero as the Desktop theme.
