What are the features of Windows Vista Firewall?

Rating:

Windows Vista Firewall is an active firewall. An active firewall drops the traffic until and unless a rule exists to allow a particular form of traffic. The prime features of Windows Vista Firewall are as follows:

  • Bi-directional functionality: Windows Vista Firewall functions in a bi-directional manner. Unlike its predecessors, it analyzes inbound traffic too against the rules, and accordingly, allows or drops the traffic.

  • Stealth: The Windows Vista Firewall is capable of stopping an external host from performing OS fingerprint. The Stealth feature of Windows Vista Firewall ensures that an attacker is unsure which operating system or firewall is in use.

  • Boot time filtering: Earlier versions of Windows Firewall were open to network traffic from the moment it booted up until the firewall runs. The boot filtering feature ensures that the computer's network interfaces are protected from the moment when they become active during the boot process.
These features of Windows Vista Firewall make it different from earlier versions of Windows firewalls.
