The Import utility provides the following four modes of import:

1. Full: This mode imports the full database from an export dump file. The FULL parameter is used to specify the full import mode. Only users possessing the IMP_FULL_DATABASE role can perform a full import.



2. Tablespace: This mode allows a privileged user (user possessing the IMP_FULL_DATABASE role) to import a specified set of tablespaces from an export dump file. The TRANSPORT_TABLESPACE parameter is used to specify the tablespace import mode. The TABLESPACES option specifies the set of tablespaces to be imported from the export dump file.



3. User (Owner): This mode allows a user to import all database objects belonging to his schema from an export dump file. A privileged user importing in this mode can import all database objects belonging to schemas of a specified set of users. The FROMUSER parameter is used to specify the user import mode. The TABLES option specifies the set of database objects to be imported from the export dump file.



4. Table: This mode allows a user to import specific tables and partitions from an export dump file. A privileged user can qualify the tables by specifying the schema that contains the tables. The TABLES parameter is used to specify the table import mode.

All users can perform import operations in table and user import modes. Privileged users can perform import operations in all modes. When performing an import, a privileged user must specify one of the four import modes. Otherwise, Oracle returns an error. However, if a user without the IMP_FULL_DATABASE role fails to specify an import mode, it is considered as the user import mode.
