The Oracle Internet Directory (OID) is part of Oracle’s Identity Management infrastructure. Since it is based on the powerful Oracle Database 10g version database, it supports millions of entries and a number of users on a single OID directory node. It is a general-purpose directory that helps in the management of the user and network information .

There are two command-line tools for managing the OID, which are as follows:

  1. OIDMON (OID Monitoring): The OID Server instance must be started at first for connecting to an OID server for reading data. Since the OIDMON performs the work of managing the OID instance, the OID monitor must be started prior to starting the instance. Therefore, the sequence for starting the OID server is as follows:

    • Using the OIDMON utility, start the OID Monitor process.
    • Using the OIDCTL utility, start the OID server instance process next.
  2. OIDCTL (OID Control): The actual commands to start and stop the OID server instance are issued through OIDCTL utility.
