What are the common file formats for creating a resume?

Rating:

A person or candidate can use several different file formats for creating resumes. Choosing a file format for resume depends mainly on the candidate's choice and also on employers' requirement. There are some common file formats that are widely acceptable:

  • Text format: The resumes in text format are also known as plain text or ASCII resumes. This format contains little formatting and little can be done to make it visually impressive. However, they are not vulnerable to viruses and can be read by many different programs on different platforms.
  • Rich Text format (RTF): It combines the best qualities of formatted and text resume. RTF resumes allow incorporating most formatting techniques to make a resume visually appealing. Resumes in this format, too, can be read by numerous programs on many different platforms.
  • PDF: The resumes in this format are compatible with all computer platforms and are not vulnerable to viruses. However, a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view the resumes.
  • HTML: Resumes in this format are generally created to post as Web pages. HTML resumes retain all formatting characteristics of a word processing document, although the attributes may render inconsistently in different browsers. HTML resumes posted on a Web server have unique advantages over other resume formats. Employers can access these resumes at any time and apply a keyword search.
