There are four common application types used to create a remote server as follows:

  1. Console Application: It is the simplest type of application that can be created using Visual Studio .NET. Console applications are the easiest type of .NET remoting server to deploy.
  2. Windows Executable Application: It comprises of Windows forms and accommodate better usability than console applications through the Windows user interface. The primary method of deploying a Windows executable application is to use a Windows setup project.
  3. Windows Service Application: It is an application that starts when Windows starts and can execute under its own security context. The primary method of deploying a Windows service application is to use a Windows setup project.
  4. ASP.NET Web Application: It is the most common solution for creating a .NET remoting server as an ASP.NET application. Internet Information Services (IIS) hosts ASP.NET applications.
