What are SMTP folders?

The system folders used by the SMTP protocol are called SMTP folders. These folders are used to temporarily store messages sent across the network. SMTP uses the following system folders that are created on an Exchange Server 2003 server:

  1. Pickup: This folder stores any SMTP formatted messages delivered by SMTP.

  2. Queue: This folder stores inbound SMTP messages, which are processed by the Internet information Service (IIS) for delivery.

  3. Bad Mail: This folder stores undeliverable messages that cannot be returned to the sender.
