What are share permissions?

Rating:

In a Windows XP-based network, resources can be shared among users by using share permissions. Such permissions are applied on the shares for security reasons. A user can use Share permissions, which provide more configuration options than Simple File Sharing, with both the FAT or NTFS file system.

Users' access to the shares can be restricted through the following set of permissions:

  1. Read: It allows users to only view the folders, files, and data. It also allows users to run programs.

  2. Change: It allows users to have Read permissions as well as the ability to add and delete folders, files, and data.

  3. Full Control: It allows users full control on the shared resources. Users get Read and Change permissions as well as the ability to change share permissions.
Note: A user can use share permissions only if the Simple File Sharing is disabled. Share permissions work only across a network. If a user logs on to the computer (containing shared resources) locally, no permission will be applied.
