What are security groups?

A security group is used to define permissions on resources and objects. It can be listed in discretionary access control lists (DACLs). Windows Server 2003 operating systems use only security groups to assign permissions. Security groups can also be used for nonsecurity purposes. A security group has all the capabilities of a distribution group.
