What are parameter modes?

Rating:

Parameter modes define the behavior of parameters (sometimes referred to as arguments) specified in the parameter list of a procedure. Each parameter in the parameter list of a procedure can have a different parameter mode. When creating a procedure, one of the following three modes can be specified for each parameter in the parameter list of the procedure:

  1. IN: It indicates that the parameter passes a value from the calling environment to the procedure. This means that a user must specify a value for an IN parameter when calling a procedure. IN is the default parameter mode, i.e., when a parameter mode is not specified when specifying a parameter, it is taken as IN.

  2. OUT: It indicates that the parameter passes a value from the procedure back to its calling environment after execution of the procedure.

  3. IN OUT: It indicates that the parameter passes a value from the calling environment to the procedure and possibly a different value from the procedure back to the calling environment after execution of the procedure.
