What are overlays?

July 9th, 2009 by uCertify Leave a reply »

Overlays are software components that are analogous to LDAP backends and can be stacked on top of the backend calls. They act as callbacks on top of backend responses to modify their behavior. Overlays may be compiled statically into slapd or may be dynamically loaded when module support is enabled. Some overlays are used as a frontend and some for global use. The main function of overlays is to customize the behavior of existing backends without changing the backend code.
