What are Oracle background processes?

Rating:

Oracle background processes are responsible for handling functions that would otherwise require multiple, independent Oracle programs for each user process. By default, Oracle consists of the following five background processes:

  • System monitor (SMON)
  • Process monitor (PMON)
  • Database writer (DBWn)
  • Log writer (LGWR)
  • Checkpoint process (CKPT)
Other background processes may also be configured as per user requirements. Oracle background processes perform their I/O related tasks in an asynchronous manner to increase parallelism for enhanced performance and reliability.
