NTFS file permissions are used to control user's access to files. The NTFS file permissions are applicable to files located at NTFS volume. Following are the five basic NTFS file permissions:

  • Read: This permission allows a user to read the file, view file attributes, ownership, and permissions.

  • Write: This permission allows a user to overwrite the file, change file attributes, and view file ownership and permissions.

  • Read & Execute: This permission allows a user to run applications and perform the actions permitted by the Read permission.

  • Modify: This permission allows a user to modify and delete a file, and perform all the actions permitted by the Write and Read & Execute permissions.

  • Full Control: This permission allows a user to change permissions and take ownership and perform all the actions permitted by all other file permissions.
A user's access to a file can be controlled by selecting the Allow or Deny permission option.
