Waits occur when worker threads are either waiting for a task to complete, or to be assigned to them. This can cause problem in the performance of the database. The SYS. DM_OS_WAIT_STATS stored procedure can be used to view the waits statistics and diagnose the performance problem.

Waits are of the following types:

  • Resource wait: The resource wait occurs when a thread is waiting for such a resource that is not available. A resource may not be available because of being locked by some other thread.
  • Queue wait: The queue wait occurs when a thread is idle and is waiting for a task to be assigned to it. It is related to the system background task such as cleanup task, deadlock monitor, etc.
  • External wait. The external wait occurs when SQL Server thread is waiting for an external event to finish.
