Microsoft test 70-229 SQL Server 2000 Design is not very different from the SQL Server database administration test (70-228). Most of its test objectives are same as those of the database administration test. If you have been working with SQL Server and are familiar with its various components, you will have no difficulty with these aspects of the test. However, if you are new to SQL Server or do not have any database administration background, you should review the 70-228 SQL Server administration test before taking the Microsoft test 70-229. Once you have cleared either of the tests for SQL Server 2000, passing the other one will be a lot more easy.

This test is fairly challenging, and somewhat tricky, even for a person having a couple of years experience with SQL Server database. This test focuses more on the development aspects, such as the logical and physical design of databases based on business requirements and the implementation of these designs using the features available in SQL Server.

Here is our two cents for a candidate preparing for the SQL Server design test (70-229):

  • Always remember that there are many different ways to perform the same tasks in SQL Server. Anything that can be done in Enterprise Manager can be done through Transact SQL, and vice versa. A recommended course of action is to practice using both these methods.
  • Know how to set up a system with SQL Server 2000, design a database, and create tables and relationships. Also, practice accomplishing the same task using various options such as triggers, functions, stored procedures, constraints, and views, and try to figure out the advantages and disadvantages.

  • Know how to create various indexes and write the SELECT statements and study query plans from the performance point of view.

  • Know SQL Server inside and out, and be able to build ad hoc queries as well as complicated stored procedures that are not only functionally correct but also help your application to perform well.

  • Set up another system with Oracle Server and practice accessing/migrating data by setting up remote server, running ad hoc queries and creating DTS packages.

  • The 70-229 test is scenario-based. You will be presented with a detailed scenario and then will be asked a question about proper database design solutions relating to the scenario. You should keep this in mind when preparing for the test.
