CIW has specified more than twenty-five objectives for the C1D0-510 test, which are grouped under three topics. Following are some important areas in which an individual should possess good knowledge before taking the C1D0-510 test:

  1. Identifying job roles in the IT industry, including the responsibilities, tasks and skills they require.
  2. Identifying the infrastructure required to access the Internet, including hardware and software components.
  3. Describing Internet services, functionality of Web browsers, and infrastructure required to support an Internet connection.
  4. Describing security issues related to Web browsing and e-mail, and viruses.
  5. Describing how to use the Web to obtain legal and international business information, and how to transmit text and binary files using popular Internet services.
  6. Explaining important Internet communication protocols, basic principles of the Domain Name System (DNS), use of different types of Web search engines effectively, user customization features in Web browsers, including preferences, caching, and cookies.
  7. Describing issues in developing a corporate Web site.
  8. Describing how to create a basic HTML form that accepts user input, and to test and analyze Web site performance issues.
  9. Explaining how HTML files are formatted to maintain compatibility with older Web browsers.
  10. Describing how to include images and graphical formatting in HTML files, and features and appropriate use of XML.
  11. Defining and applying essential aspects of the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) standard.
  12. Using Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) to create Web pages.
  13. Defining e-commerce and related technologies and concepts necessary to develop a secure, useful interface (i.e., storefront).
  14. Describing networking and its role in the Internet, relationship between IP addresses and domain names, functionality and components of the Web server, and common performance issues affecting Internet servers and resources.
  15. Demonstrating knowledge of languages commonly used to provide database connectivity to Web sites.
  16. Representing technical issues to a non-technical audience.
  17. Identifying and using principles of Personal Information Management (PIM), including: common applications.
  18. Recognizing essential database concepts and relating project management concepts and terms to the IT profession.
