What are alpha channels?

An alpha channel is a special type of channel that is used to store selections. It enables you to retrieve a saved selection and use it again. You can also copy the selection to another image while the original image is open. The selection can also be edited when the channel in which it is saved is selected in the Channels palette, just as if you were in Quick Mask mode.

What is the Patch tool?

The Patch tool is used to repair a selected area of an image with pixels from another area of the image or a pattern. It matches the texture, lighting, transparency, and shading details of the sampled pixels to the source pixels. The Patch tool can also be used to clone a selected area of an image.

What is the Vertical scale?

Vertical scale adjusts the height of selected letters. The default appearance of font’s height is always 100%, and the Character palette enables you to adjust it from 0% to 1000%. You can adjust the vertical scale by entering a new value for Vertical scale in the Character palette.

Tip for activating the Convert Point tool temporarily

When one of the three Pen tools is active, press the Alt key (Window) or the Option key (Mac) to access the Convert Point tool.

When an arrow tool is active, press the Ctrl+Alt keys or command+Option keys to access the Convert Point tool.

Take the following steps to edit the source contents of a Smart Object.

  1. Select the Smart Object in the Layers palette.

  2. Double-click the Smart Object thumbnail.

    Or, alternatively, choose Layer > Smart Objects > Edit Contents.

    Or, alternatively, select the Edit Contents option from the Layers palette menu.

What are High Dynamic Range (HDR) images?

High Dynamic Range (HDR) images are 32-bits-per-channel images that represent the entire dynamic range of the visible world. The images contain luminance levels. These levels exceed the luminance data that can be stored in 8 or 16 bits per channel images.
