An alpha channel is a special type of channel that is used to store selections. It enables you to retrieve a saved selection and use it again. You can also copy the selection to another image while the original image is open. The selection can also be edited when the channel in which it is saved is selected in the Channels palette, just as if you were in Quick Mask mode.
