The MovieClip class is used to add the concept of frames, frame labels, and scenes in ActionScript, with all the properties and methods required to query and control the playhead. A user can create MovieClip objects programmatically, but frames, labels, or scenes cannot be added with ActionScript code.

Flash tools are arranged in a panel and are used for creating different types of graphics in Flash. The names of the tools, along with their respective icons, are given in the table below:

The array access ([]) operator enables a user to set and retrieve instance, variable, and object names dynamically. The operator also allows a user to access the properties of an object, including a movie clip.

The syntax for the array access ([]) operator is as follows:

1. The array access ([]) operator is used to surround the elements of an array.

   myArray = [ a0, a1,...aN ]

   In the above syntax, myArray is the name of the array.

2. The array access([]) operator is used to surround the index of each element of the array to access it directly.

   myArray[ i ] = value

   In the above syntax, myArray is the name of the array.

3. The array access ([]) operator can also be used to dynamically set and retrieve a property of an object.

   myObject [ propertyName ] = value

   In the above syntax, myObject is the name of the object, and propertyName is the name of the property of the object a user wants to access.

Conditional statement is used for decision-making. It performs an action depending on whether or not a condition is true. If the condition is true, the statements following the condition are executed. But if the condition returns false, it will disregard the enclosed actions and continue to the next statement that follows the condition block.

There are several types of conditional statements. Each are explained below:

The if statement: The if statement is a simple decision-making statement that is used to execute a statement or a group of statements based on some condition. If a condition is true, the statement in the if block is executed; otherwise, the statement following the if block is executed.

The syntax of the if statement is as follows:

if(condition)
{
   //statements
}

The following example will demonstrate the use of the if statement:

var a;
var b;
if(a>b)
{
   trace(a);
}

The above code will execute only if the value of the variable a is greater than the value of the variable b, and the value of the variable a will be displayed on the output window.

The if-else statement: The if-else statement is used to execute a statement or a group of statements based on some condition. If the condition is true, the statement in the if block is executed. If the condition is false, the statement in the else block is executed.

The syntax for using the if-else statement is as follows:

if(condition)
{
   //statements
}
else
{
   //statements
}

The following example will demonstrate the use of the if else statement:

var a;
var b;
if(a>b)
{
   trace(a);
}
else
{
   trace(b);
}

In the above code, if the value of the variable a is greater than the value of the variable b, the value of the variable a will be displayed on the output window. If the value of the variable b is greater than the value of the variable a, the value of the variable b will be displayed on the output window.

The if-else if statement: The if-else if statement is used to check several conditions. If any of the condition is true, the statement of that block is executed; otherwise, the value in the else block is executed.

The syntax of using the if-else if statement is as follows:

if(condition)

   //statements
}
else if(condition)
{
   //statements
}
else if(condition)
{
   //statements
}
else
{
   //statements
}

The following example will demonstrate the use of the if-else if statement:

In the above code, five conditions are given. If anyone of the condition is true, the statement following the block will be executed.

The conditional statement: The conditional statement can be used in the same way as the if else statement. The conditional statement is a single line statement that can be used in place of the if-else statement.

The syntax of using the conditional statement is as follows:

variablename=condition ? value1 : value2

If the condition is true, the statement following the question mark(?) will be executed. If the condition is false, the statement after the colon(:) is executed.

The following code will demonstrate the use of the conditional expression:

var c=a>=b ? a : b
trace(c);

In the above code, if the value of the variable a is greater than or equal to the value of the variable b, the value of the variable a will be displayed on the output window. If the value of the variable b is greater than the value of the variable a, the value of the variable b will be displayed on the output window.

The switch statement:

A component is a movie clip that performs a specific task. Components are designed to allow a user to create interface pieces that can be reused over and over again. A component allows a user to customize the component either during authoring in Flash or at run time with ActionScript.

Flash includes its own set of built-in components such as CheckBox, List, ComboBox, PlayButton, CaptionButton, FLVPlayback, etc. Components can be found in the Components panel. To open the panel, choose the Window > Components command.

Take the following steps to add a component to a movie manually:

1. Select Window > Components to open the Components panel.

   

2. In the Components panel, select a component and drag it onto the stage.

   Or, alternatively, double-click a component in the panel.

   

3. To test the movie, choose Control > Test Movie.

   

Take the following steps to distribute objects to layers:

1. Select the objects to distribute to layers.

   

2. Select Modify > Timeline > Distribute to Layers.

   

   Or, alternatively, right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) one of the selected objects, and select the Distribute to Layers option from the pop-up menu.

   

Take the following steps to break text apart to place each character in a separate text field:

1. Click the text field with the Selection tool .

   

2. Select Modify > Break Apart.

   

   Note: This action breaks the selected text apart and places each character in a separate text field.

   

3. To convert the characters to shapes on the Stage, select Modify > Break Apart again.

   

Take the following steps to duplicate a motion tween:

1. Click the first frame, hold down the Shift key, and then click the last frame in the Timeline to select the motion tween.

   

2. Select Edit > Timeline > Copy Motion.

   

   Or, alternatively, right-click on one of the frames, and choose Copy Motion from the pop-up menu.

   

3. Select a keyframe containing a different symbol instance in the Timeline.

   

4. Select Edit > Timeline > Paste Motion.

   

   Or, alternatively, right-click on the frame, and choose Paste Motion from the pop-up menu.

   

Take the following steps to add a shape hint:

1. Select the first keyframe of the shape tween.

   

2. Choose Modify > Shape > Add Shape Hint.

   

   Note: A letter in a red circle appears in the middle of the shape.

   

3. Move the first shape hint to a point on the shape.

   

4. Select the last keyframe of the shape tween and move the shape hint to a corresponding point on the end shape.

   

5. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 to add more shape hints to refine the shape tween.
