When should an index be created?

An index should be created in the following conditions:

  • The column(s) contains a wide range of values.

  • The column(s) contains a large number of NULL values.

  • The column(s) is frequently used in a WHERE clause or join condition.

  • The table containing the column(s) is large, and most queries on the table retrieve less than two to four percent of the rows in the table.
