What is the use of the virtual keyword?

Rating:

The virtual keyword is used to override the methods of the base class in a sub class. A sub class can change the implementation of virtual methods by using the override keyword. The override keyword explicitly indicates that the sub class is overriding the method behavior of the base class. By default, methods are nonvirtual and cannot be overridden. The following code snippet displays the use of the virtual keyword:

using System;
class baseclass
{
   public virtual void BaseMethod()
   {
      Console.WriteLine("Base Class Method()");
   }
}
class subclass : baseclass
{
   public override void BaseMethod()
   {
      Console.WriteLine("Sub Class Method ()");
   }
}
class Test
{
   static void Main(string[] args)
   {
      baseclass a= new baseclass();
      subclass b= new subclass();
      a.BaseMethod(); // calls the baseclass's BaseMethod()
      b.BaseMethod(); // calls the subclass's BaseMethod()
      a = new subclass();
      a.BaseMethod(); // calls the subclass's BaseMethod()
   }
}
