What is the service master key?

The service master key is automatically generated when a credential is encrypted first time. The service master key is derived from SQL Server service accounts having the Windows credentials. It is encrypted by Windows Data Protection API. It can be decrypted only by the service account under which it is created or by a principal that can access the service account.
