What is the <setting> element?

The <setting> element is defined in an application's configuration file used by application settings. It defines a setting that is a piece of information specific to either the application or the current user. Therefore, the <setting> element can be a sub-element of either the <applicationSettings> or the <userSettings> element. It contains the following two attributes:

  • name: The name attribute is required in the <setting> element. It defines the unique ID of a setting. The setting is saved with the name ProjectName.Properties.Settings.


  • serializedAs: The serializedAs attribute is required in the <setting> element. It defines the format that is used for serializing the value to text. Its valid values are: string, xml, binary, and custom.
