What is the Shadow Copies feature?

Rating:

The Shadow Copies feature of Windows Server 2003 is used by administrators and users to recover files or folders from damage as quickly as possible. When this feature is enabled on a volume, Windows Server 2003 automatically caches the copies of files in the shared folders as they are modified. This feature is used for the following purposes:

  • Recover files that were accidentally deleted: If a user accidentally deletes a file, an administrator can open a previous version of the file and copy it to a safe location.

  • Recover from accidentally overwriting a file: If a user accidentally overwrites a file, an administrator can recover a previous version of the file.

  • Compare versions of a file while working: The previous versions of a file can be used to check what has changed between the different versions of a file.
Note: The Shadow Copies feature is supported only on NTFS volumes.
