What is system monitor (SMON)?
Rating:
System monitor (SMON) is an Oracle background process that is responsible for performing crash recovery or instance recovery when a failed instance re-starts. SMON also cleans up temporary segments that are no longer used. Transactions that are skipped during crash or instance recovery due to file-read or offline errors are recovered by SMON when the associated tablespace or data file is brought back online. SMON also coalesces free extents in dictionary-managed tablespaces to make the free space contiguous and easier to allocate.
