What is parallelization of backup sets?

Rating:

Allocating multiple channels (server sessions) for parallelizing the creation of backup sets is known as parallelization of backup sets. When the PARALLELISM parameter is set to a value greater than one, or multiple channels are allocated manually, the Recovery Manager (RMAN) writes multiple backup sets in parallel. The work of backing up database files is divided among multiple server sessions. The Recovery Manager automatically decides which channel should back up which set of database files. However, the BACKUP...CHANNEL command is used to manually assign a channel to back up a particular set of database files. A backup set cannot be striped across multiple channels, i.e., the work of writing a single backup set cannot be divided among multiple channels.
