What is multiplexing of backup sets?

Recovery Manager (RMAN) simultaneously reads multiple database files from disks and writes them to the same backup piece of a backup set. For example, RMAN can simultaneously read data blocks from three data files and combine and write these blocks in a single backup piece. The technique of simultaneously reading multiple database files and writing the blocks from these files in the same backup piece is called multiplexing of backup sets.
