What is circular logging?

Rating:

Circular logging is a process enabled on the storage groups on an Exchange Server 2003 server. It conserves a significant amount of disk space by overwriting a transaction log file when its size reaches 5MB. In Exchange Server 2003, circular logging is disabled by default and in this case, if a transaction log file reaches 5 MB in size, it is renamed and a new one is created. This can result in significant disk usage if backups are not performed regularly. An administrator can overcome this problem by enabling circular logging on a storage group. Enabling circular logging on a storage group causes it to be applied to all the databases in the group. Therefore, if an administrator wants circular logging to be applied to a particular database, he will have to first add the database to a new storage group and then enable circular logging on that group.
