What is an offline backup?

An offline backup is a backup of a tablespace or data file, which is taken while the tablespace or the data file is offline and the database is open. A tablespace can be taken offline by executing the ALTER TABLESPACE...OFFLINE; statement. Similarly, a data file can be taken offline by executing the ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE...OFFLINE; statement.

After taking the backup, the tablespace can be brought online using the ALTER TABLESPACE ...ONLINE; statement. Similarly, the data file can be brought online using the ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE...ONLINE; statement.
