What is an image copy?

Rating:

An image copy is a backup of a single data file, archived redo log file, or control file, which is taken by using the Recovery Manager's (RMAN) COPY command or an operating system command. Unlike a backup set (a backup of one or more data files, archived redo log files, or control files, which is taken by using the RMAN's BACKUP command), an image copy is not stored in an RMAN-specific format. Therefore, an image copy can be restored manually, whereas a backup set can be restored only by using the RMAN's RESTORE command.
