What is an Oracle instance?

An Oracle instance is a combination of System Global Area (SGA) and Oracle background processes. When a database is started, a memory area, called SGA, is allocated and Oracle background processes are started. The SGA and the Oracle background processes manage the associated database's data and serve the database users. The SGA is de-allocated when the instance is shut down.
